On behalf of the Potsdamer Yacht Club I would like to warmly welcome you to the 31st edition of the International Optimist Team Cup at Lake Wannsee in Berlin, Germany.
I learned regatta sailing in the optimist dinghy on the lakes around Berlin and still think back to those times with many positive feelings. With the team of the Berlin Sailing Association I have participated several times in the International Optimist Team Cup about 10 years ago. I always had lots of fun and gathered a lot of valuable experiences of great importance for my later sailing career.
In the optimist team race the individual position of a sailor is only of minor importance as compared to the ability to put one´s own performance at the service of the team, interacting with the other teammates, motivating them and finding a good team spirit, which makes complex tactical decisions look easy. In the team race nobody wins on her or his own, but success can only be achieved together with the complete team.
Also in sailing the 49er skiff together with my teammate Tim Fischer, such experiences from team racing have helped me a lot. Although the 49er is surely more demanding than the optimist dinghy in technical and athletic terms, the basic tactical skills and the ability to work in a team acquired during optimist sailing are an excellent prerequisite for success. In this regard, a great teamwork and team spirit in our training group has enabled us to establish among the worlds best 49er teams within only a few years and to win the Bronze medal at this years world championships in Aarhus/Denmark.
As for you, by qualifying for this team cup you have already shown that you are not only very good individual sailors, but also great team players. I wish you all a lot of success, fair conditions and above all a lot of fun for the races lying ahead. Make use of the possibility to measure with the best optimist team racers from all over the world and do your best!
